Built in 1950 for Crosville Motor Services of Chester, it has a Gardner 7.0 litre, 5-cylinder engine and 5 speed crash gearbox and was originally used on bus services across the company’s operating area that extended from Cheshire, Liverpool and The Wirral into north and central Wales. It was later converted for use as a towing bus but has now been extensively renovated as a dual-purpose vehicle, with luxury seats, as would have been used on longer distance and express services.

Throughout the 1950’s & 60’s Northampton had a very standardised and conservative vehicle policy, buying only front-engined Daimler chassis with traditional rear entrance, open platform bodies. 258 was one of 61 similar vehicles purchased between 1959 and 1968. The Roe body includes teak framing and is one of the last buses built to this longstanding method of construction. Originally painted all over red with just a single central cream band 258 is now in the livery, with additional cream areas around the windows, used from the mid 1970’s.
